Alone in the night on a dark hill
with pines around me spicy and still,
and a heaven full of stars over my head,
white and topaz and misty red;
myriads with beating hearts of fire
that aeons cannot vex or tire;
up the dome of heaven like a great hill,
I watch them marching stately and still,
and I know that I
am honoured to be
witness
of such majesty.

Sola nella notte su una buia collina
pini mi circondano tutt’attorno audaci e immobili,
e un cielo colmo di stelle sopra di me,
bianche, topazio e di rosso velate;
miriadi, pulsanti cuori infuocati
che i secoli non possono affliggere nè sfiancare;
nella cupola del cielo come su una grande collina,
le osservo marciare maestose e calme,
e io so che
sono onorata di essere
testimone
di cotanta  maestà.
